Proposed Educational Budget Cuts

The issue of budget cuts for education continues to be an ongoing problem in America. Now the cuts will be affecting those who need it the most. Proposed budget cuts will cut funding for over 200,000 children who would have otherwise had a spot in the Head Start Program. In a bill already passed by the House and being considered in the United States Senate, more than a billion dollars will be cut from the Head Start program.

Head Start is a preschool program that is directed towards low-income families. This program is essential in helping low-income children get the resources they otherwise would not have access to, to aid in improving their overall academic functioning and give them an essential “head start” as they head into the public school system. If this bill passes it would not only cut almost 200,000 slots for preschool children, but it would also cut approximately 26,000 jobs.

In addition to the budget cuts proposed for the Head Start program, there are additional cuts proposed of approximately 5.6 billion dollars in Pell grants. This essentially will eliminate the possibility of attending college for many potential college students.

More cuts are proposed for the Title I program of approximately 694 million dollars. These cuts would eliminate services for 957,000 children in need and would cause the loss of about 9,000 jobs.

Educational budget cuts will result in lost educational jobs therefore adding to the already over-stressed economy. Even more concerning is the fact that these cuts will have a negative effect on the educational system and the overall academic functioning of children who already struggle.
